CSIRO warns Australia must act on “unique window of opportunity” to set up a globally competitive hydrogen electrolyser industry

Wollongong, Australia, 4 December 2024: Hysata, the inventor of the world’s most efficient electrolyser technology, has welcomed the CSIRO’s report released today which states that “Hydrogen Electrolyser Manufacturing presents a unique manufacturing opportunity for the nation.”

The report says that this once in a generation opportunity has come about because:

  • The global electrolyser industry is in its infancy but has a rapid growth path,
  • Australia has a strong starting position because of innovations like Hysata’s high efficiency alkaline electrolysers, and
  • The domestic pipeline of electrolyser customers is second only to India.

CSIRO estimates that by 2050, a domestic industry of electrolyser manufacturers and associated services could generate significant amounts of revenue and job growth for Australia. Hysata has already created 100 jobs, with a multi-billion-dollar conditional order pipeline. Decarbonising the hard-to-abate sectors globally will require trillions of dollars of investment that Australia can take a leading position in.

It also recognises that manufacturing capabilities developed for electrolyser manufacturing could translate to other manufacturing areas, and raw material entry points could support onshore processing.

Hysata CEO Paul Barrett said:

“Hysata is pleased to see CSIRO recognize the significant economic and job opportunities presented by Australian electrolyser manufacturing, as well as Australia’s unique potential to become a global leader. The global electrolyser market presents an exponentially greater opportunity and is poised for continued growth.

“We are proud to be recognised in the report as one of the electrolyser manufacturers that is translating Australian innovation into commercialisation through our high efficiency electrolyser.

“Developing sovereign advanced manufacturing and material supply chains for electrolysers in Australia has huge benefit for our own local green hydrogen projects and the creation of new export markets such as green iron and green steel.

“But the CSIRO warns that ‘scaling up is a challenge.’ It is incumbent on all of us – governments, companies and communities – to step up to the challenge and unlock the power of this extraordinary technology.

“The window to act is closing quickly, and while companies like Hysata have world-leading innovation and private investment – we need decision makers in Australia to pull all the levers to ensure we can seize our competitive advantage, and deliver the economic benefits outlined in the CSIRO report.”
