Quality Lead
at Hysata Pty. Ltd. (View all Jobs)
About us
Hysata is on a mission to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to green hydrogen with the world’s most efficient electrolyser. Our breakthrough capillary-fed electrolyser achieves an unprecedented 95% system efficiency (41.5 kWh/kg) – a step change from incumbent technologies, which typically sit at ~75% and already ahead of International Renewable Energy Agency’s 2050 target. This leap in performance enables a radically simpler system design, slashing both energy use (opex) and system and renewables capex.
Hysata’s innovation has captured global attention, including publication in Nature Communications and support from leading strategic and financial investors such as BP, POSCO and Vestas. With over 100 team members, we’re a high-performing, purpose-driven company, proud to be 35% women, representing 20+ nationalities, and united by a shared mission to enable the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, chemical manufacturing, shipping and aviation.
Having secured Australia’s largest ever cleantech Series B raise of US$111 million, Hysata is scaling rapidly to bring our technology to market. With strong customer demand and a clear path to manufacturing at scale, we are on track to become a global leader in green hydrogen and put a major dent in global emissions.
About the role
We are an electrolyser technology company that designs and manufactures electrochemical stacks, including in-house manufacturing of cell materials, while sourcing balance-of-stack hardware from external suppliers.
As we move from pilot-scale to sustained production, we are establishing a dedicated Quality function.
The Quality Lead will build and lead Quality from the ground up, defining systems, processes, and culture that support rapid scale-up while meeting customer, regulatory, and safety requirements.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone comfortable operating in a startup manufacturing environment, balancing rigor with pragmatism.
The role is based in Australia at our on-site at manufacturing facility in Port Kembla but has some supplier travel required.
Role responsibilities
1. Quality Management System (QMS)
- Design, implement, and maintain a fit-for-purpose QMS suitable for electrolyser manufacturing;
- Lead certification efforts (as applicable), such as:
- ISO 9001 (primary)
- ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 (interface support)
- Establish document control, change control, deviation, and CAPA processes;
- Ensure QMS scales appropriately with production growth.
2. Manufacturing Quality (In-House Components)
- Define quality controls for:
- Cell material fabrication (coatings, substrates, treatments)
- Cell material assembly
- Stack Assembly
- Develop:
- Incoming material specifications and control plans
- In-process inspection plans
- Final inspection and acceptance criteria
- Implement statistical methods where appropriate (SPC, trend analysis);
- Support yield improvement and defect reduction initiatives.
3. Supplier Quality Management
- Establish supplier qualification and approval processes;
- Define inspection and acceptance criteria for:
- Key repeating cells
- Mechanical hardware
- Purchased sub-assemblies
- Lead supplier audits (remote and on-site);
- Manage non-conformances, corrective actions, and supplier performance metrics.
4. Product & Customer Quality
- Define product quality requirements aligned with customer specifications and contracts;
- Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and documentation;
- Lead root cause analysis for internal and customer-reported issues;
- Act as primary quality interface for customers on technical quality matters.
5. Compliance & Risk
- Support compliance with relevant Australian and international standards (e.g. AS/NZS, IEC, CE where applicable);
- Participate in:
- Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
- Process hazard reviews related to manufacturing quality
- Ensure traceability of critical materials and processes.
6. Quality Culture & Team Development
- Establish a quality-first culture across engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain;
- Train production staff on quality procedures, inspection methods, and documentation;
- Hire and develop additional quality personnel as production scales;
- Act as a pragmatic advocate for quality—not a blocker to progress.
What you'll bring
1. Essential
- Degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related technical field;
- 7+ years of experience in manufacturing quality,
- Experience building or significantly expanding a Quality function;
- Strong working knowledge of:
- ISO 9001
- Root cause analysis methodologies (8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone)
- Supplier quality management
- Hands-on experience in a factory environment.
2. Highly Desirable
- Experience with electrolysers, fuel cells, or hydrogen technologies;
- Experience with:
- Continuous and batch processing of materials
- Chemical or wet-process manufacturing
- Sub-assembly and Final Assembly
- End of line quality testing
- Familiarity with CE, IEC, or global product compliance;
- Startup or scale-up manufacturing experience.
3. Personal Attributes
- Comfortable with ambiguity and rapid change;
- Pragmatic and solutions-oriented;
- Able to balance speed with discipline;
- Strong communicator across engineering, operations, and suppliers;
- Willing to be “on the floor” as well as strategic.
What success looks like (First 12–18 Months)
- A functioning, scalable QMS in place;
- Stable manufacturing quality for in-house components and assemblies;
- Clear quality expectations and performance from suppliers;
- Reduced scrap, rework, and customer quality issues;
- Quality seen internally as an enabler of scale, not a bottleneck;
- Hiring of additional Quality staff to support expected growth.
Why join us
- Build a Quality department from the ground up;
- Direct impact on commercial electrolyser deployment;
- Work at the intersection of clean energy, manufacturing, and scale-up;
- Opportunity to grow into a senior leadership role as the company expands.
