Graduate Mechanical Engineer
at Hysata Pty. Ltd. (View all Jobs)
About us
Hysata is on a mission to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to green hydrogen with the world’s most efficient electrolyser. Our breakthrough capillary-fed electrolyser achieves an unprecedented 95% system efficiency (41.5 kWh/kg) – a step change from incumbent technologies, which typically sit at ~75% and already ahead of International Renewable Energy Agency’s 2050 target. This leap in performance enables a radically simpler system design, slashing both energy use (opex) and system and renewables capex.
Hysata’s innovation has captured global attention, including publication in Nature Communications and support from leading strategic and financial investors such as BP, POSCO and Vestas. With over 100 team members, we’re a high-performing, purpose-driven company, proud to be 35% women, representing 20+ nationalities, and united by a shared mission to enable the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, chemical manufacturing, shipping and aviation.
Having secured Australia’s largest ever cleantech Series B raise of US$111 million, Hysata is scaling rapidly to bring our technology to market. With strong customer demand and a clear path to manufacturing at scale, we are on track to become a global leader in green hydrogen and put a major dent in global emissions.
About the role
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the development and execution of material, mechanical and thermo-fluid testing activities. You will work alongside experienced engineers across mechanical, thermal, fluid, chemical, and electrical domains to help design experiments, build test rigs, analyse data, and improve product performance.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong engineering foundation, hands-on curiosity, and a desire to grow in a fast-paced deep-tech startup. You will thrive in the fast-paced start-up world where no two days are the same. You’ll be joining a team of smart, driven, collaborative and highly dedicated individuals who love solving engineering challenges and who are excited to be fighting the climate crisis.
Role responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of test methods and procedures for new materials, mechanical assemblies, and thermo-fluid systems;
- Assist in designing, building, modifying, and maintaining in-house test rigs and fixtures. Demonstrating adequacy through hand calcs and FEA simulations;
- Conduct hands-on material testing such as tensile, compression, leak, pressure, and durability testing (as applicable). Assist in preparing material samples, fixtures, and instrumentation for testing;
- Collect, organise, and analyse test data using tools such as Excel, Python and statistical analysis software (JMP). Prepare clear documentation of test setups, results, and observations;
- Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe laboratory practices;
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (design, industrialisation, chemical) to support test planning and interpretation of results; and
- Assist with mechanical design tasks using 3D CAD (NX), including simple models and drawings.
What you'll bring
- Engineering degree in Mechanical, Materials or similar field;
- 0–1 year of experience (internships, research projects, or industry placements welcome);
- Exposure to material characterisation or mechanical testing in laboratory environments through university or industry experience;
- Basic familiarity with data acquisition systems, sensors, or instrumentation;
- Proficient with 3D and 2D mechanical design with CAD software (NX preferred, but others acceptable);
- Hands-on experience through university projects, workshop activities, prototyping, Formula SAE, robotics, or similar is highly regarded;
- Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn;
- Clear communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team;
- Comfort working in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment; and
- Interest in clean energy, hydrogen, batteries, or energy systems is a plus.
