About the role

We’re looking for a hands-on IT Systems Engineer to join our IT, data and security team. Reporting to our Senior IT Systems and Security Engineer, you’ll own the operational and administrative layer of our IT environment — keeping our controls deployed, our identities governed, and our systems well-maintained.

This isn’t a helpdesk role — our Managed Service Provider (MSP) handles day-to-day end user support. You’ll be focused on the operational and administrative work that keeps our security controls, identity management, and systems running well. You’ll the internal face to our MSP and step in where your skills add value for escalation and capacity.

You’ll work closely with:

• Our Senior IT Systems and Security Engineer’s technical direction and prioritisation;
• Our IT Managed Service Provider (escalations and handoffs);
• Our external cybersecurity partner (audits, remediation, control implementation);
• Our data and AI engineering function (shared platform and identity work).

This role is ideal for someone with 2–3 years of experience who wants to grow across security operations, identity, cloud and infrastructure in a high growth clean energy company.

Role responsibilities

• Deploy, configure and maintain endpoint security tooling (e.g. ThreatLocker, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Intune);
• Assist with the management and administration of MFA enforcement and identity lifecycle in Entra ID;
• Drive remediation actions from security assessments and penetration tests under the Senior IT Systems and Security Engineers direction;
• Support our cybersecurity partner with evidence gathering, control implementation and audit preparation;
• Support IT operations at our manufacturing and plant facilities, including identity, device and access management for engineering workstations and IT systems that interface with our operational technology (OT) environment;
• Own user onboarding and offboarding workflows: device provisioning, account creation, access management and licence assignment;
• Administer Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Intune and Purview policies;
• Handle escalations from our MSP that require deeper investigation or infrastructure-level changes;
• Assist with network and firewall changes (FortiGate);
• Support cloud infrastructure tasks in AWS and Azure;
• Uplift knowledge bases, SOPs and configuration baselines;
• Contribute to disaster recovery testing and business continuity documentation;
• Help roll out, integrate and support modern AI tools across the business – including identity, access and governance;
• Administer internally hosted applications, assist with ongoing maintenance and improvement; and
• Act as the primary internal point of contact for the MSP helpdesk staff, maintaining day-to-day visibility of the ticket queue, assisting directly where capable, and involving the broader IT team when required.

 What you'll bring to the team: 

• 2–3 years in an IT operations, security or systems administration role;
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration (Entra ID, Intune, Exchange, Defender);
• Hands-on experience administering endpoint security tools;
• Solid understanding of identity and access management principles (least privilege, zero trust, identity lifecycle, MFA);
• Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities with minimal direction;
• Experience maintaining IT documentation and governance artefacts;
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, pragmatic mindset; and
• Comfortable using AI tools to accelerate your work – drafting documentation, automating routine tasks, scripting and learning new platforms quickly. 

Bonus points if you have: 

• Experience in an MSP environment (broad exposure to diverse stacks);
• Familiarity with FortiGate firewalls, Juniper switching and networking fundamentals (VLANs, VPNs, routing etc.);
• Exposure to AWS (IAM, VPC, CloudWatch) or Azure cloud services;
• Experience working in an R&D or manufacturing environment; and
• Familiarity with security frameworks (Essential Eight, ISO 27001, IEC 62443).
